Require That The Teachers And Faculty Of Gwinnett County Go Through LGBTQ+ Education
Why this petition matters
In light of the recent law change banning transgender athletes from competing in the gendered team that they identify with. Not only this, but incidents of blatant homophobia or transphobia (harassment, verbal assault, threats, and even physical assault) have been swept under the rug on multiple occasions. Recently, an incident involving a teacher at Central Gwinnett High School has brought to everyone’s attention how badly teachers, counselors, administrators, and other faculty need to be educated on the importance of LGBTQ+ acceptance, what issues LGBTQ+ youth (and the community in general) face, and how they can support said youth through it. Misgendering, invalidation, and bias can have serious inflictions on an already-suffering community. It has been proven time and time again affirming LGBTQ+ youth reduces mental health issues, suicide, and suicidal thoughts. Gwinnett County supposedly “prides itself on acceptance of every student regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, etc.”, but when it comes to putting action to words, it doesn’t hold up. A lot of homophobia and transphobia comes from ignorance. This would educate those who need it most since they work with the people whom the bigotry impacts.
