Lakeisha Tate started this petition to Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners

Gwinnett County has been lauded one of the fastest growing counties in the USA with a burgeoning diversity that exceeds other counties in the region. One of the major thoroughfares is named for President Ronald Reagan.

In recent days an audio recording of Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon resurfaced. The voice of Ronald Reagan revealed his racist characterization of African leaders as being monkeys who don’t wear shoes. The language, meaning and tone reveals his racism as people of color.

Whereas we respect his role as president we should not condone his unhonorable actions. Racists should not be memorialized in public spaces occupied by any one group or person offended. The daily driven acknowledgment of the street name is damaging to the drivers internalizing the legacy forged through racism.   Given the contributions from the diverse members of Gwinnett County, I would recommend that their contribution be honored with respect. I propose a name change that represents the dreams and ambition of all Gwinnett citizens to be “United”. I petition that Ronald Reagan Pkwy be changed to United Pkwy.
