Surf Club Coffs Harbour started this petition to Gurmesh Singh - Local MP for the National Party (National Party) and

THE DUMPING OF TONNES OF SAND BY OUR STATE GOVERNMENT ONTO ICONIC PARK BEACH HAVE DESTROYED THE BEACH.

LOCALS AND TOURISTS ARE UNABLE TO VIEW, USE AND ACCESS THE BEACH.  THIS INCLUDES NO DISABLED ACCESS AND DIMINISHED ACCESS FOR SURF CLUB AND COUNCIL RESCUE VEHICLES.

Park Beach used to be a major tourist attraction. It is Coffs Harbour's MAIN patrolled Surf Beach - patrolled 365 days a year by Council lifeguards and by Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving volunteers. The Queen visited the beach on her last Australian visit and "Park Beach" Surf Club is an iconic part of Coffs Harbour's history since its inception in 1926. It also houses a historic photographic museum proudly curated by members of its Board.

Tonnes of sand (from the harbour) was dumped directly in front of the Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club, by a "state government department" leaving the beach almost unusable and inaccessible to most. The sand is full of heavy metals that blow into the Club during northwesterly winds.

The view from the Club to the ocean is completely blocked. Access for Surf vehicles is diminished, meaning urgent rescues may be delayed. The beach is basically cliffs of sand many metres tall (see photo).

The Council built viewing platform in front of the Club is blocked in by sand, rendering it useless.  It had disabled access and was a perfect place to view whales and the surf. The beach cannot be viewed from anywhere. Guests cannot see migrating whales from the Club, which was a major drawcard for tourists.

The Coffs Harbour Surf Life Saving Club operates a bar and restaurant which is how most funds are raised to save lives on our local beaches.  The view was a major drawcard for bringing guests to the Club, however, the sand dunes have been artificially raised to block this view completely, affecting business greatly. It was one of the only venues in Coffs Harbour with an ocean view and it is now very disappointing for guests who bring visitors to see the ocean.

We would like our local MP - Gurmesh Singh and the Coffs Harbour Mayor - Denise Knight to make moves to find out how this problem can be solved.  Please sign this petition, thank you so much.
