Help us Prevent the Signal Peak Trail Proposal

For decades the Signal Peak area East of Gunnison has been used by hikers, bikers, horsemen, hunters and motorized enthusiasts. The area has an established system of roads and trails for the public to use and enjoy. Deer, elk, sage grouse and other wildlife call this place home and are dependent on the areas closest to Gunnison for their critical winter habitat. In its current state Signal Peak does not get a substantial amount of pressure from any one user group, however that will all change with the proposal from Gunnison Trails to construct approximately 40 miles of new bike trails in the area. With the new trails will come bike races, rendezvous and other events. Illegal user-created trails will also become an issue. This type of pressure on the landscape will be detrimental to the wildlife, especially the mule deer and sage grouse. It will also displace other public land users from the area along with other negative impacts. With all the recent controversy surrounding recreation and public land abuses in Gunnison County, we strongly oppose the passage of any such proposal.
