Gulliver Preparatory School Parkland Walkout MARCH 14, 2018

On February 14, 2018, in Parkland, Florida, a mass shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The shooter has been identified as Nikolas Cruz, who conducted the shooting using an M&P15 semiautomatic rifle. The shooting resulted in the loss of 17 lives, as well as 15 injuries. There is a high possibility that the shooting would have been much less fatal, had there been more legal restrictions on guns, specifically those that are semiautomatic. Most individuals with any common sense should be able to see that no one other than a member of the US military should have the ability to possess a semiautomatic weapon like the one used in the Stoneman Douglas Shooting. However, Congress has yet to pass the proper restrictions on the purchase and possession of certain firearms that should have been in place years ago. In honor of the victims of the fatal shooting at Stoneman Douglas, students across the US are planning a movement to protest for Congress to take steps toward gun control that will be crucial for saving the lives of future victims of school shootings across the United States. I encourage Gulliver Preparatory to join the movement and allow students to walk out of their class on March 14, 2018, for 17 minutes to honor the 17 victims of the shooting. Our schools are no longer safe, and being a student myself, I no longer feel secure at the place where I spend nearly forty hours of my life learning each week. Gulliver Preparatory School needs to be a part of this movement and take a stand for gun control. It is critical that we, as students, can use our voices and our strength in numbers to make a change.
