Gretchen Waldorf started this petition to Guilford College Administration and

On the Guilford College campus, we pride ourselves on an inclusive environment for everyone. In the nineteenth century, when the Guilford College administrative board accepted a sizable donation from the Duke family in exchange for the nominal honor of having an academic building dedicated to them, they made it that much harder for students in 2020 to have an environment that upholds the seven core Quaker values. The Quakers that established this college let us down when they accepted the money of a slave-owning family, and further tarnished the Quaker values when they named a building after the family.

Lavina Curry worked at the New Garden Boarding School in the 1840's, the precursor to Guilford College. She was a free Black woman and she was a widow. She used her late husband, Arch Curry's freedom papers to help at least fifteen runaway Black men emigrate west to freedom.

I am petitioning the Administrative Board of Guilford College, the Guilford College Board of Trustees, and the President of Guilford College to rename Duke Hall to Curry Hall, so we can honor a Black woman who lived and worked where we have lived and worked for the past 180 years.
