Save The Boileroom from Closure

We have put together this petition to save our venue, Guildford’s only alternative and independent live music venue.
Our family run venue was opened in 2006, and is managed by a collective of people who believe the venue provides a much needed creative space for the local community; encouraging and supporting local bands and nurturing upcoming talent.
Our fairly new neighbours, who rent the house adjacent to the venue have put in an application to review our license, with the direct intention and request that the council revoke our license with immediate effect. Their message is very clear: they want to shut us down. They believe we are in breach of our license conditions. We believe we manage the venue to a high standard with significant consideration for the local community.
Since 2013, over 25,000 music fans have walked through our doors; The M.U, Creative Café, local schools including St Peter’s, George Abbott, and County School have all hired our venue. We have hosted charity fundraising nights for the likes of Macmillan Cancer trust, Teenage Cancer Trust, Oxjam, and so many more. We have held free community events monthly for years, matinee shows for Under 18s and a yearly street party.
Situated in a residential area, from the outset we have always been very proactive and conscious that what we do does not adversely affect the lives of our local residents, to that end we have a great relationship with the majority of our neighbours. This review is being sought by 2 people.
We take our licensing conditions very seriously, and we are constantly updating and improving our soundproofing and management of events. In 2010 owner Dominique Frazer was awarded the Trude Adler award from the Noise Abatement Society by Mike Weatherly MP for Portslade and Hove; for our community approach to running our live music venue with sensitivity, insight and consideration for the local community; something which we consistently strive to do.
In 2012, Dominique Frazer was also nominated for the Community Spirit Individual under the Local Heroes Community Spirit Awards 2012 by local radio station 96.4 Eagle (an honour voted for by their listeners). In the year 2012-2013, Surrey Heath Area Partnership for Education (S.H.A.P.E) also awarded us a certificate of appreciation for our support and guidance to students participating in their work experience scheme through various schools across Surrey.
As I’m sure everyone is aware, it is hard running an independent venue with no funding. We have all read recently about other local venues that have come under fire from situations similar to ours, and other independent venues that are struggling under the recession, and we are no different – it is a challenge.
It is time to take action, to stand up for what you believe in. Save YOUR local music venue. Thank you for reading this, and thank you taking the time to sign. The Boileroom x
