Ellie Jeffery started this petition to Guild of Students at the University of Birmingham

We, the students of the University of Birmingham and members of the Guild of Students, wish to object to the recognition of the Birmingham Students For Life group by the Guild.

Where we respect and honour the freedom of speech and opinions that University and the Guild cultivates, we object to this group being officially recognised by an organisation that is meant to preach tolerance.

Recent events on the Fab n Fresh Facebook page has brought to our attention several reasons why this group shouldn't be officially recognised:

1) People going through abortions on campus deserve the right to feel protected and safe - they shouldn't be persecuted by their fellow students, instead, they should be able to seek security and help without feeling blamed or shamed.

2) Whereas we recognise the right for men to have a say in the pro-life argument, the Chair of the Pro-Life society is a man. We object to this, as although men are more than able to hold an opinion on the matter, it is a female issue and women's voices should be the most prevalent in the matter. The Birmingham Students for Choice society is chaired by a woman, and we, at the very least, as the Birmingham Students for Life society to do the same and ask their Chair to stand down so a woman may take the lead role in a female issue.

3) Freedom of speech only goes so far. The Guild officially condemns racist and homophobic sentiments on campus, and it could be argued that allowing a Pro-Life group to have a platform, they are expressing sentiments that could be likened to those that the Guild does not recognise. Abortion is a human right, and people should be able to make their own decisions about their bodies without having a Pro-Life group on campus which is vocal about its opposition to allowing women to have bodily autonomy. This itself could be seen as sexism, especially with someone of the male gender in charge of the society, which the Guild does not condone.

4) Recent events in the media, especially concerning the Ohio Abortion Law, are proving the dangers of strong Pro-Life sentiments. Recent prepositions ask doctors to reimplant ectopic pregnancies, a medically impossible process. Ectopic pregnancies would kill the mother if not aborted, and by standing on the side of the people who suggest these laws, the group essentially condones these actions, which are borderline human rights offences.

Although we see the importance of free speech on campus, and we are not asking the group to disband, we are simply asking the Guild of Students to derecognise the society to protect women on campus and to help people who are going through abortions feel safe and secure without facing persecution.
