Taking Root Growing Youth Empowerment started this petition to Guam Restaurants

We, the students and friends of Humanities Guåhan’s Taking Root Program, believe that single-use plastic straws are among the small plastic items that we can eliminate to help decrease the damage that our island and waters are receiving from plastic pollution. We feel it is our duty to enlighten our community about the harmful impacts these little, everyday items cause. We strongly support the establishment of:
   1. A reusable straw policy for restaurants that bans single-use plastic straws.
   2. A straw policy that informs the restaurant customers about single-use plastic straws, which would only be distributed on demand by restaurants.

Plastic straws often contain a chemical known as BPA (bisphenol-A). This chemical and others in plastics have been linked to health issues such as insomnia, heart problems, obesity, hypertension, and problematic development for pregnant women and fetuses. When straws are not disposed of properly, they end up either on the land or in the ocean. This leads to many harmful situations. Some examples include: wildlife mistaking straws for food, island pollution, and water pollution.

This petition will be submitted to various restaurants on Guam. By signing this petition, you are taking a small step to help us tackle the world’s plastic problem. Everything is connected, so by ceasing the use of single-use plastic straws, you are helping keep wildlife habitats clean, the environment clean, and people safe.
