The first American circuses began shortly after the country was founded.  In many cases the circus provided people’s first view of new inventions, exotic animals and people, and popular entertainment. That was fine then, but we have progressed enough as humans to know that these animals deserve better.

Groupon is currently advertising a Ringling Bros. Circus offer.  Ringling Bros. has been been slapped with large penalties, dating back to 2007, for Animal Welfare Act violations. Elephants used by Ringling are whipped, beaten, and yanked by heavy, sharp steel-tipped bullhooks behind the scenes, prior to performing. Many big cats are forced to eat, drink, sleep, defecate, and urinate in their small, barren cages. The only relief that many are given from this nearly perpetual confinement is during their performances, when they are subjected to whippings and roaring crowds.

A former Ringling Bros. employee recently teamed up with PETA to plea with potential circus goers, to stay away from the circus.  In her short two months with Ringling, she witnessed incidents of abuse, including: an elephant in Tulsa, Oklahoma, beaten with bullhooks so severely that she bled profusely and cried out in pain.  A trainer viciously whipped a camel and punched a miniature horse in the face.  Trainers jabbed horses with pitchforks and gave them extremely painful “lip twists” to force the animals to obey commands.

I started this petition to STOP Groupon from offering the Ringling Bros. Circus deal.  Every animal involved pays the price every time anyone buys a ticket to the circus.  These animals are depending on us!
