Repeal Grosse Pointe Public School’s New High School Virtual Schedule

The Grosse Pointe Public School system is planning to extend the schedule for high school students from 4 half days a week to four whole days a week online. This means staring at a computer screen for 7.5 hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Along with that, the schedule on Tuesday and Friday is flipped, making it even more confusing for students. This also means that students who work will not be able to work their full hours and may even have to quit their jobs. Some students work to support their families or pay for college, so having to quit jobs or lessen hours is going to do more harm than good. Also, being on the computer for 7.5 hours a day plus having homework to do online is extremely unhealthy in very many ways. Staring at a screen for that long is terrible for eye health, sitting down having to hunch over to type and stare at your screen is terrible for your neck and back, and sitting in your house for now double the time it used to be is terrible for mental health. When we were done at 12 or 1, we could go for a walk, workout, make ourselves meals, go get carry out to support local businesses during the pandemic, and generally have more time to give our minds a rest. This new plan does not allow for that and will clearly do way more harm than good. We cannot allow the school system to do this to us!
