Grinnell College: Save the planet, allow dumpster diving!

Thousands upon thousands of pounds of perfectly usable items are sent to the landfill each year by Grinnell College. Dumpster diving is a common, ethical, and environmentally responsible practice engaged in by students, faculty, and townspeople. In recent years Grinnell College security has strictly enforced an apparent "no-diving" policy, and has threatened to charge dumpster divers with trespassing. For an institution that prides itself in progressive, forward thinking, this policy is out of step.

Furthermore, the Grinnell College Statement on Environmental Responsibility statement reads:

"Grinnell College believes that as a liberal arts institution with a strong social commitment, we have a duty to the environment, society, and future generations to be leaders in environmental stewardship, education, and policy. Grinnell College is therefore committed to incorporating environmental responsibility into policies, decisions, and daily life on campus."

It's time for Grinnell College to take action and bring policy in alignment with its stated principles.
