Huron Valley Schools Parent Advocates, Inc. started this petition to Governor Gretchen Whitmer and

Michigan continues to be one of the few states in the country with a significant number of school districts offering modified remote instruction in either hybrid format or completely remote.  The mental health crisis, loss of learning, economic impact and suicide rates continue to spiral out of control with no end in sight.  Schools are not just brick and mortar institutions offering education.  For many they are a lifeline; a source of the only meals a child may eat in a day, safety & shelter from abuse and neglect, and the primary source of therapy services for special needs children.

Governor Whitmer requested that all districts offer an in-person learning option by March 1st.  State and Federal funding has been provided to all Michigan districtsthrough recent legislation to support the opening of schools, and yet districts continue to resist; to the direct detriment of the students they are sworn to serve.

Mitigation strategies have been implemented successfully throughout the state and the country. Evidence shows that school is the best and safest place for children to be.  “The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advocates that all policy considerations for school COVID-19 plans should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.”

There is NO REASON to continue school closures or to implement new closures.  Every Michigan child deserves the CHOICE to opt for a fair & equitable FULL TIME in-person learning option through their public school, regardless of income or availability of school of choice.  Public education is a RIGHT for our children. Remote learning is not a one size fits all, and should not be the only option available to children through taxpayer funded public schools in Michigan.  We fully support remote learning as an option for families that choose.

Mandated remote learning disenfranchises students of all races, socio-economic status and cultural backgrounds.  Learning loss continues when this is the only platform available, placing Michigan students farther and farther behind other more progressive states.  As parents, coaches, educators, attorneys and healthcare professionals, we firmly believe education should be prioritized and that every child should be provided a quality in-person learning option for all that choose.  We have had enough of being told what is best for our children.

ENOUGH of school boards, administrators, bureaucrats and special interest groups creating havoc in the lives of our children.

ENOUGH of using children as political pawns.

ENOUGH of scare-tactics and fear-mongering.

The science is clear.  Children are not drivers of COVID-19.  Schools are SAFE.  Children ages 5-14 have a ONE IN A MILLION chance of dying from COVID-19.  Yet they have a 10 times higher rate for suicide.  MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS.  And closing schools is unnecessary INTENTIONAL EMOTIONAL DISTRESS to our children. Michigan is the ONLY state in the country to mandate asymptomatic testing on healthy children, further contributing to emotional distress, wasted resources and unnecessary quarantines of healthy school aged-children.

Huron Valley Schools Parent Advocates, Inc. (MICHIGAN Save Our Kids Open Our Schools) openly demands and advocates for ALL districts in the State of Michigan to provide a 5 day a week, full time, in-person learning option for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.  We oppose any and all directives from the Executive Branch that would mandate sole remote learning.
