KEEP THE MONUMENT AT THE GREGG COUNTY COURTHOUSE

This petition had 1,519 supporters

At this very moment, our American history is under attack. A small group of individuals have asked that our Civil War Monument on the Gregg County Courthouse Square be removed.  All across our great country our Civil War monuments are being removed and/or vandalized by those who seek to edit them out of our country's history.

-          public law 85-425 sec 410 approved 23 May 1958 that made all Confederate Army, Navy, and Marine Veterans equal to US Veterans! Additionally, under U.S Public Law 810, approved by the 17th. Congress on February 26th. 1929 the war department was directed to Erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S grave sites!

We cannot tell our story with integrity if we do not tell it honestly.  We must not allow peddlers of revisionist history to sanitize how and why we are the great country we have become. The Civil War was undoubtedly one of the darkest times in our country's history. However, contrary to what some believe, slavery was not the primary reason behind it. The Civil War was fought primarily because of the North's stranglehold on the South through unfair tariffs.

Another little-known fact: The Confederate Army was made up of White, Black, Indian, Mexican, French, Spanish and Italian soldiers, not just White men as some would have us believe. These American people of color also believed in the cause of the Confederacy and fought and died for that cause.

I urge Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt, Mayor Andy Mack, the Gregg County Commissioners, and the Longview City Council, to refuse to remove this or any other historical monument. Please save our history.

As signers of this petition we are saying that we do not want the Confederate Monument moved or harmed in any way, and that we do want the monument to be protected and preserved for future generations.

Longview and Gregg County has a proud history and was built by responsible citizens including Confederate Veterans.
