Keep Gregg County Confederate Memorial
Keep Gregg County Confederate Memorial
TO: The elected members of the Gregg County Commissioners Court and the Honorable County Judge Bill Stoudt of Gregg County.
Whereas the great County of Gregg is one of many Texas counties that is named after a leader from our community who participated in the Civil War on the side of the Confederate States of America; and
Whereas in the year of our Lord 1911 the citizens of the County of Gregg chose to commemorate the person for whom our County is named; and
Whereas the destruction of historical markers is an apparent effort to erase the history of this county; and
Whereas such wanton destruction of these markers differs in very little degree from those who have engaged in book burning and “re-education” such as has been seen in Nazi Germany, Communist China, and other totalitarian regimes; and
Whereas history, whether pleasant or deplorable, must be learned and maintained in truth in order to protect our heritage and to protect our posterity from repeating that which was harmful.
Therefore:
We, citizens of the United States, and proud citizens of Texas, hereby petition the Gregg County Commissioners Court to stop the ill-advised destruction of historical markers and retain the existing statues, plaques, and other memorabilia of Gregg County Texas.
We affix our signatures to this petition in support of retaining all historical markers found on Gregg County, Texas.
