The Fight for Trikafta

The Fight for Trikafta

Throughout my 22 years of dealing with cystic fibrosis and how it affects me it is with great sadness that I along with 1800 other people with CF in Australia are being denied access to a life changing medication due to the price of it, since when is there a price on life? 20 other countries have now got access to this life changing medication, however an agreement between Vertex and the Australian government hasn’t been reached and the next meeting isn’t until December so 1800 other Australians with CF will have to wait until the next meeting to find out a decision meanwhile struggling with their own health everyday until this medication can be approved.
Throughout my journey i’ve tried various medications to try and improve my lung function and weight however none of them have had the effect that the new medication Trikafta will have, it’s been proven that within weeks of people starting this medication their lung function has improved by as much as 20% if not more which is amazing to hear.
I have had many ups and downs with my journey of having cf, spent most of my childhood in hospital and i don’t want to be spending my adulthood in hospital either. I have gone two big years without an admission into hospital however i know my health isn’t as good as it once was. My lung function has been all over the shop it normally sits around the 68% mark however my last lung function done was 58% which is a huge decline that i can’t afford to have more of and i know having this new medication Trikafta would make a massive difference to my life and many others.
