Centacare runs a number of support groups through their PACE (Panic Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive & Eating Disorders) program across various locations in South Australia. These support groups are for people who suffer from Panic & Anxiety, OCD, Eating Disorders and Hoarding. It is a free service and can be accessed by anyone above the age of 16. These support groups help sufferers feel less alone in the often isolating experience of having a mental health issue. Support groups give participants the opportunity to meet others who share similar experiences and challenges and learn strategies to help with their recovery.
Funding for PACE Recovery Support Groups has only been secured for the first six months of 2018 because of changes in funding allocation due to the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). With this funding professionals are employed by Centacare to facilitate formal fortnightly face to face support group sessions.
I attend an OCD support group and have met a number of lovely people who all share similar experiences and have made strong friendships with fellow OCD sufferers. These friendships allow the support to continue outside of the group and have been invaluable in helping me feel less alone in my struggle with mental illness.
Unfortunately mental illness is very prevalent in our society and is on the rise. Free services such as support groups are vital not only to the individual sufferers but also to their families and the community at large. Whilst I have found support through the group I attend if funding is withdrawn how will people connect with each other in the future? Please sign this petition to urge the Federal Government to provide secure ongoing funding for PACE support groups to continue.
