Please Ban Advertising of Alcohol During Sport

Dear Greg

As a parent I am concerned that alcohol is being advertised during sport, as are two out of three parents, according to a recent poll.  When watching the Australian Open there were numerous times when advertisements from Canadian Club were aired as well as Liquorland and Jacobs Creek. The Alcohol Ad Review Board retweeted this comment: Jan 23 @AmyPFerg from @FAREAustralia which says “Sport is one of Australia’s greatest pastimes... we know kids are watching, so to assume that kids are not being impacted by the alcohol sponsorship & advertising arrangements during sport is ridiculous." Apparently doctors are pushing for a ban on alcohol being advertised during cricket, according to @Matt_Cooke86 @TheRACP @croakeyblog #boozefree via @ABCNews. And some people are even concerned about sports stars being under the influence of alcohol, according to Sober Up Sydney!‏ @SoberUpSydney 'Under the influence of would-be role models... alcohol and sport are a bad mix'

Further to parents concern about the culture of alcohol and sport, there is also a push by some to ban advertising of alcohol near schools and at school events, according to articles in the Herald Sun by Grant McArthur. and and

It seems reform has taken place in regard to tobacco and advertising and the laws which have banned smoking in public eating areas. Can the same be done with alcohol, considering the amount of damage connected with drink driving and increased violence in homes? Apparently, alcohol is also a carcinogen, so the dangers to one's health are just coming to light, as they did with smoking many years ago.

As the Federal Health Minister, is there anything you can do to change this situation?

Yours faithfully,
