The NSW hospital system is under increasing stress associated with rising Covid-positive patients requiring intensive hospital care.  The vast majority of these patients are unvaccinated.  Hospital cases are projected to increase markedly once restrictions are eased in line with the Doherty Institute plan adopted by the Federal Government and each state government.  State hospital systems are also likely to experience surges once internal borders open and restrictions are eased.  While there is some confidence that we will achieve 80% vaccination coverage of the eligible population, there are significant pockets of vaccine hesitancy and outright resistance across the country.  If such hesitancy persists, we are likely to continue experiencing high rates of infection and hospitalisation of the unvaccinated, as well as ongoing targeted lockdowns that will place significant strain on our hospital system,  as well as on the ability of the economy to recover.  Hospitals, health staff, and the taxpayer should not be burdened by  the stupidity and selfishness of a significant minority of the population.  We need to focus accountability on those people whose actions negatively impact everybody else.  Sure, choosing to get vaccinated should be their decision.  However, so should the consequences.  The government should add a medicare surcharge to all unvaccinated people to cover the higher health care costs that are likely to flow from hospitalisation, as well as to encourage common sense and civic responsibility.  I think many people feel that while the majority of people do the right thing and have complied with the myriad of health orders, we have all been made to suffer from the idiocy of the few.
