Private Health Insurers are continuing to charge premiums at the current rates.  This is in the full knowledge that they will not be required to contribute to a vast array of procedures and services which are unavailable due to the controls imposed for managing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the ban on non-essential elective surgery, and a similar ban on dental procedures, the obligations of private health insurers are significantly reduced.  Further restrictions are likely to affect many core and extras offerings. Most insurers have now committed to not increase rates this year, but this does not recognise the significant decrease in the available services.

Insurers should be placing accounts into hibernation, or at a minimum significantly reducing premiums to align with the reduction in services.  Otherwise, this gain will simply be absorbed into their bottom line, resulting in even larger profits.

Without direct action, insurers will use waiting times as leverage to prevent consumers from taking their own action.

Please sign now to pressure the government into legislating for change.
