Perth Yoga for Everybody started this petition to Greg Hunt

Under post-lock down conditions in WA, key health and exercise operators in the fitness and yoga industry are having a hard time battling with running classes and accepting a restriction over the mouths of participants. 'Strenuous' exercise practices like running are exempt from the requirement to wear a mask, where as 'gentler/non-strenuous' activities like walking are understandably being questioned or becoming ineligible from exemption.

The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK have determined that yoga is a 'strengthening' exercise but not a 'strenuous' exercise. We have found no such statement on the matter from our Australian Department of Health, which we would like to see urgently, recognizing the strenuous nature of yoga and our right to maximise our utilization of breathe when practicing outdoors, by allowing an exemption from mask wearing requirements, when the 4m and other guidance from government is followed.

It seems like yoga is currently being mistaken for a non-strenuous exercise and we must clear this up now to avoid a mix up in understanding that caused the temporary cancellation of our classes this week, following the 5 day lock-down.

Perth Yoga for Everybody would like acknowledgement by the Australian Department of Health that yoga is as a strenuous activity, noting that professionals in the wellness industry that support this petition, agree with the view that yoga requires the maximum use of (and focus on breathe) to optimise the practice for health and wellness benefit purposes.

The importance of breathe is fundamental to yoga and is at the core of every one of our classes teachings, so to allow a restriction to be accepted would promote a counter agenda of our mission, to improve the vitality and mobility of people in Australia. The threats to this mission have been severe for us all this year, yet we feel this current situation due to this misunderstanding, has the potential to cause damage to a lot of progress we have made collectively, towards that mission.

Yoga is hugely strenuous, in ways that the mind, muscles and nerves cannot cope with initially, especially when the practice is rushed and not anchored with an underpinning focus on breathe. We invite anybody along to our class for free to challenge that notion and then comment publicly afterwards that it was not strenuous. Most importantly, the practice can become severely more dangerous if breathe is not used as the key fuel source of oxygen and grabber of our participant's focus. To strain the breathe in any way during yoga is a risk we respect and are not prepared to manage as a liable community organiser.

It is for this reason we ask for your support to sign and share this petition for the rights of people practicing yoga in Perth and for the practice of yoga across the world as we be realistic about the risks to our vitality and mobility and make wiser choices about how we best achieve improvements in our health and well being.

Thank you in advance and best wishes to the Honorable politicians listening to our voices and bouncing off our involvement to secure sustainable solutions, together.

Namaste
