Take the first step to closing the pay gap by banning the salary question in job applications.

The pay gap in the UK for institutionally undervalued groups - women, BAME and LGBT+ workers and those with disabilities - will continue as long as companies base salary offers on past pay.

Removing the salary question will free job applicants from having their future pay offers anchored to their current wages, which can be skewed as a result of systemic bias. While the salary question remains, one poor pay negotiation will have a compound effect over the span of a career.

The alternative is publishing a pay range in job listings and asking applicants for their expectations. Base the salary offer on the applicant’s experience, expertise and negotiation, not their previous payslip.

Help companies deliver on their promises to close the pay gap by adopting this simple measure.

Remove the salary question and move closer to the goal of eliminating the pay gap.
