Greg Abbott signed an executive order limiting Ballot Drop Box Locations to 1 per county in Texas. This is a blatant act of voter suppression.

Texas is a state with sprawling counties, for example: Harris County (which covers most of Houston) is home to almost 5 million people, and it is 1,777sq miles. There used to be 12 locations through the city for voters to drop off their ballots, now there is one. In contrast, Rhode Island is 1,212sq miles, and home to around 1 million. There are 39 drop box locations available to voters.  

The outskirts of Houston has many low income areas, and a lot of people simply do not have the ability to drive 50+ miles to drop off their ballot. We are also on the midst of a pandemic, which prevents even more voters from being able to physically go to the polls. The only other option for these voters is to mail in their ballot from home. However, the US Postal Service has become very unreliable. Our current Post Master General had no former experience with USPS before being appointed to his position. He has implemented a lot of changes that have caused unprecedented consequences. Due to this, many people do not feel comfortable trusting USPS to deliver their ballot on time. 

Harris County is not only Democratic, but it is also one of the most diverse counties in the nation. The single ballot drop box location is located in a predominantly white area. Greg Abbott is not even trying to hide his attempts to suppress minority votes.

This election is a critical turning point that will determine what the future of our country is going to look like. For the first time in decades, Texas is going to be a swing state and has a chance to go blue. It is not just a coincidence that this election is when Greg Abbott decided to make voting more difficult for Texans. No matter what political party you identify with, we should all be able to agree that every US citizen is entitled to the opportunity to voice their opinion with their vote. During these tumultuous times, the last thing our government should be doing is making voting harder for Americans.
