Erin Kessler started this petition to Governor Greg Abbott

I am begging Governor Abbott to reconsider his position and mandate masks in our polling locations state-wide. We are already doing this in hospitals and schools, where other vulnerable Texans are present. Poll workers and their families are truly concerned about their safety in this election due to the pandemic.

My mother is 73 and has a heart condition. She has been asked to work as a judge in a polling location in Williamson County, an offer she initially turned down due to the Governor's no-mask requirement at polling locations. She was then told that due to the shortage of poll workers, there is concern her polling location may not have enough workers to operate. Because she feels so strongly about Texans’ access to voting, my mother re-examined her decision and she has now agreed to move forward as a judge.

I have been calling many disabled voters and voters over the age of 65 years old to help them navigate the rules regarding early voting and mail in ballots.  It has been a true joy to speak with these Texans, but I have also felt a growing concern for them.  Many of them are telling me that they have been asked to be poll workers and due to the shortage are making a hard choice between their health versus what they feel is their duty. I should also point out that these older Texas callers vote both Democratic as well as Republican. According to a Pew Research poll, the majority of US poll workers are over the age of 60.

Can’t we repay their sacrifice by ensuring their safety?
