As snow, ice and record low temperatures swept into Texas, the state government left it's citizens in the dark. The Texas power grid, managed by ERCOT (The Electric Reliability Council of Texas), failed almost immediately and left millions of Texans without power as temperatures dropped into the single digits and below. ERCOT claimed they were implementing a series of rolling blackouts to manage the power load, but what was was supposed to be a temporary blackout turned into days without power for thousands.  As many as 4 million Texans were without power with almost no communication from state officials or ERCOT. Citizens were forced to burn belongings and venture out through icy streets to find warming stations in the so called "Energy Capital of the World."

We demand ERCOT, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and our public officials be investigated and held accountable for the gross mismangement of resources that led to this disaster. According to the Texas Tribune, "Energy and policy experts said Texas’ decision not to require equipment upgrades to better withstand extreme winter temperatures, and choice to operate mostly isolated from other grids in the U.S. left power system unprepared for the winter crisis."

This was a preventable and predictable disaster. Years of limited regulations and almost no federal oversight led to a system designed to protect profits and not people. Texans paid the price.
