The 2020 Texas State Republican Convention is scheduled for July 16-18 in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center. After meeting on July 2nd, the Texas GOP decided to continue the Convention in-person as opposed to holding it virtually. Thus, the event will take place in a stadium with thousands of people in close proximity to each other.

With COVID-19 cases surging in not only Houston but Texas as a whole, I wholeheartedly believe any efforts to host the Convention should be through virtual means to prevent the spread of the virus and keep people safe.

Houston — where 1 in 5 COVID-19 tests come back positive — is becoming an epicenter for the virus, and any large gatherings pose a major threat to human life. This threat comes from the risk of infecting thousands of people in attendance, and the uncontrollable diffusion of the virus that is likely to happen after the event. We cannot let this happen; we cannot afford it!

Even with the largest medical center (the Texas Medical Center) in the world at our disposal, the ICU bed capacity is running out quickly. In addition, the Texas Medical Association, which represents more than 50,000 doctors and medical students, is calling for the cancellation of in-person attendance.

Party Chair James Dickey stated that the GOP has an online version of the Convention prepared, so I call upon the organizers to relook at the COVID-19 trends in Houston and Texas and reconsider implementing the virtual method they planned. Texas, and Houston especially, are in no state to host an indoor event, particularly with so many people present.

As a Houstonian, I wish to only protect the people of this great city and state. It is not too late to prevent a potentially catastrophic outcome from arising! We all must do our part to help stop the progression of the virus and inhibit putting an additional burden on our healthcare system. Together, we can preserve human life!
