Governor Abbott is pressuring schools to open for in-person learning ASAP, despite the fact that the pandemic continues to ravage the state. He condescendingly says that teachers need to "step up", even as it is clear that there is no effective plan or funding in place to ensure that schools are equipped with the PPE, cleaning supplies, and the extra teachers and space necessary to even begin to provide something close to a safe environment during a pandemic. This blatant disregard for the health and safety of students, teachers, staff, and all their families is an unconscionable act of cruelty toward the people of Texas. 

And yet, Abbott and the TEA are forging ahead with their reckless plan under the false pretense that there is no need to worry that the school environment is unsafe. But if he is so sure schools are safe, then let him prove it!

If the schools are safe enough for children and teachers, they are safe enough for him as well. That is why we challenge Gov. Abbott and all members of the TEA to commit to conducting their work from a public school building for at least one week. If he doesn't have the courage or willingness to expose himself to that environment, then he has absolutely no right to expect it of anyone else. So, the ball's in your court Abbott. It's time for YOU to step up and put your money where your mouth is. Will you lead by example or will you prove our fear is accurate - that you are willing mislead the public and sacrifice our children and teachers' safety by sending them into a situation you know to be unsafe?
