TO ALL GREENWICH CITIZENS, PLEASE READ AND SIGN THIS OPEN LETTER.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

The First Selectman of Greenwich, Fred Camillo, is doing a commendable job managing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our Town. In the best of times his job is not an easy one, but few of his predecessors have been subjected to the same “trial by fire” he now faces.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues its gruesome march across the world, we still do not know enough about how it spreads or manifests itself. Eminently qualified medical and public health professionals all warn of the dangers of close contact, and caution strongly against providing the public with opportunities to gather in groups or settings that encourage letting down one’s guard. At this critical juncture, it is essential that the First Selectman be allowed to do his job in concert with regional, state, and federal democratically-elected leadership, and that he receive the full and complete support of all of the Town’s citizens and elected officials.

During this crisis, First Selectman Fred Camillo has shown critical flexibility in a fluid and ever-changing landscape, and real maturity and courage in making the right – and in some cases unpopular – decisions. He meets daily with his emergency response team, and realizes the science is still unclear, warranting extreme caution in any loosening of social distancing directives. We need to stay the course and remember that we will get through this, but only if we do it together.

As this situation evolves, we must continue to support Fred Camillo in his efforts to protect the health and safety of every single one of the citizens of our town. We expect and believe he will consider all the variables, that he will give expert legal, medical, and public health opinion their due, and that he will exercise deliberate and measured judgment.

As all civil societies recognize, situations such as this involve a lot of give and take, and in that spirit we the undersigned pledge to support Fred Camillo on this journey.
