“The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.”  ~ Ann Wigmore

We call on the Greenwich Board of Education to improve the quality and nutrition of school food and replace Styrofoam cafeteria trays with a safer, eco-friendly reusable alternative.  Food is an essential daily need for everyone, just like sleep!  Without quality, healthy food, our ability to adequately perform simple activities significantly declines.  Our children need nutritious food that is balanced and provides the fuel source they need to learn, grow and sustain their school day.  Food should be served on wares that support good health, environmental stewardship and waste reduction, not toxic, wasteful and unsustainable Styrofoam trays.

What are the problems with the food currently served in Greenwich Public Schools?

Our current lunch food provider lets our children down in significant ways.  Our students are served highly processed foods that are full of bad fats, bad oils, processed sugars and contain artificial flavors and artificial colors.  Some of these ingredients are banned in other countries.

What improvements do we suggest for better nutrition and better tasting food?

We are our children’s best advocates and it is our responsibility to provide the best opportunity and success for life.  This starts with what they eat!  We demand:
·     Better quality food that is free of the bad fats, bad oils and processed sugars linked to diabetes and heart disease
·     Food that is free of chemicals and additives linked to cancer
·     Food with no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no dyes, no additives, no chemicals and no high fructose corn syrup
·     More fresh fruits and vegetables, meats of the highest grade possible without fillers, and minimally processed food - free of toxic chemicals

Why is it essential to replace Styrofoam trays with a safer, eco-friendly reusable ware?

Every day in school cafeterias, our children are exposed to a toxic material that creates significant waste and environmental damage for just minutes of use.
·     Styrofoam contains styrene, a possible human carcinogen and neurotoxin that can leach into food
·     Petroleum-based, non-recyclable Styrofoam creates a trail of harmful pollution and waste
·     Almost half a million Styrofoam trays are trashed each year in our school cafeterias to be incinerated at a cost to taxpayers and to the detriment of our air and soil quality

What actions should the Board of Education undertake to provide healthier food served on safer, eco-friendly wares?

·     Commit to a year-long pilot program that provides healthy food via a healthy food service management company and/or consultant to gain more experience and data as a district
·     Provide reusable food ware systems, such as durable trays with dishwashers throughout the school district, starting school year 2019-20
