In an effort to end institutional racism, Hwy 29 in Greenville should be changed from Wade Hampton Blvd. to Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Wade Hampton was a Confederate general, and at the time of his death, he was one of the largest slave-owners in the country. It is antiquated and racist to honor a slaveholder like Hampton. Instead, to correct this wrong, the new name of Hwy. 29 should be changed to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Most major cities in the United States already have a road honoring Dr. King, as an influential, peaceful Civil Rights leader. Greenville is behind the times, and on the wrong side of the racial divide, by honoring a slaveholder instead of Dr. King.
