A day after Superstorm Sandy ravaged the Rockaways, Greenpeace showed up alongside Occupy Sandy to bring solar power to an area that was in the dark for weeks, and which continues to suffer the effects of the storm's devastation and the government negligence that followed. As weeks go by and we shift from triage into long term recovery, sustainable rebuilding and community organizing, Greenpeace's presence is now more important than ever. We need them to help us push for renewable energy and smart grids in the rebuilding of the Rockaways, we need them to help combat the Rockaway pipeline and the asbestos ridden sand that will be used for rebuilding dunes throughout the peninsula. Plus, we need them 'cause they're our friends, comrades and allies -- and because we don't know when the next beached whale might show up.
The team at YANA (You Are Never Alone), the devastated community center where they landed a day after the storm and that they helped turn into a major relief hub for the Rockaways -and now into a living example of sustainable rebuilding for the region-, as well as folks from Occupy Sandy and Restore the Rock would like to formally suggest that Greenpeace open an office in the Rockaways and bring the boys back so that they may continue to inspire and mobilize by our side. That, or at least transfer some of them from Washington DC to the New York office.
New York has the eyes of the world on it and our response to this crisis will set an example around the globe. We need Greenpeace to help us avoid disaster capitalism and set a precedent of sustainable community resiliency before the next storm.
Come on, Greenpeace, we love you!
Open an office in the Rockaways!
