Danielle Vorkapich started this petition to Greendale Parents and

Recently, the Greendale School Board voted to remove traditional, separate Honors courses for three of the four core academic classes in the high school:  English, Science, and Social Studies. The board claims this is done to support decreasing remedial test scores and to "increase access to rigorous curriculum for all students."  However, making changes to an educational model with only one segment of the student body in mind - the struggling or lower-level learners - is not the solution, nor is it truly equitable.  This is only designed to help struggling learners; it is not designed to help ALL LEARNERS.  In this plan, students who are "honors" will just be doing more assignments in one general classroom.  They are calling this "honors extension."  The board also claims there is data to support this and that everyone will benefit; however, this data is from districts that are not similar to Greendale, so it is confusing why GHS would aim to copy this model.  Rather, the administration should redesign and improve the instruction of elementary instruction and do a better job of identifying which students need more support at an early age.  They should also revamp the regular and remedial instruction at the middle and high school level. They should not remove separate honors classes as this is a not a benefit or improvement for that population of students.  Greendale has prided itself on being an academically competitive school.  This model will create a watered-down system of instruction where one teacher is managing a class with remedial, regular, and honors-level students in one space.  GHS teachers do not have specific training for this, and it is confusing and unsettling to think how this will actually work (what it actually looks like in the classroom) and help ALL THE STUDENTS in the classroom simultaneously.  Furthermore, Greendale High School consistently ranks as one of the "Top 10" school districts;  why remove something that works to keep GHS academically competitive and strong? Changing the quality of instructional time, the time that is spent on instruction, and physical space of instruction for ALL to solve the educational deficits of some does not seem like the right plan for GHS.  Please support this petition to reinstate what GHS has always done and been successful at:  offer separate honors classes at the high school for students who choose and want the extra challenge.  Provide them that choice.
