Greek Life at Marymount University

Greek Life at Marymount University
Why this petition matters
For years, there have been discussions and inquiries at Marymount University from both enrolled and prospective students about the presence or even mere idea of greek life on campus. The conversation and students' interest in greek life have lingered around the student population for a while; however, university officials and others have been hesitant in welcoming greek life due to its negative connotation that it carries, as well. Admittedly, in years past, Marymount students have pledged at city-wide chapters, yet there was never been an organization's chapter founded on campus. Founding numerous greek life chapters on campus, from Interfraternity Council (IFC) to National Multicultural Greek Council (NMGC) to Panhellenic Council (NPC) to National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is beneficial in more ways than one.
Each council is unique in its own way while still acknowledging and emphasizing some of the same values and principles within each greek life organization. A lot of these morals, ethics, and values coincide with the Religious Sacred Heart of Mary (RSHM). Whether it is promoting the highest ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service to the community around them or fostering leadership development or creating a sense of community of brotherhood/sisterhood between students, aside from the negative connotation, the founding principles align with the RSHM. Furthermore, chartering greek life chapters on Marymount University's campus (1) increases enrollment, (2) creates a sense of belonging, (3) increases student engagement and spirit, (4) develops a multicultural community, (5) increases retention and networking opportunities and much more. Greek life will set the standard and expectations for other clubs and organizations, as well.
Marymount University has been rumored to being avoidant in these decisions because they are hesitant and afraid that introducing greek life may tarnish their image as a university and staff; however, we will never know unless we try. If you have been surrounded by greek life, you know the positive outcomes and benefits; and if you are interested, please sign this petition.
