Tom Bliss started this petition to Great Torrington Cavaliers

The Great Torrington Cavaliers are building a full size timber replica of the Mayflower, which they plan to burn on the 29th of August.

This is a profligate waste of the carbon that was stored by trees over many decades, which will all be released back into the atmosphere along with soot and other pollutants in a few pointless minutes.

Even more seriously, this sends totally the wrong signal to the world in celebration of the original Mayflower (note, that's the May flower - i.e. blossom on living hawthorns).

We ask them to keep their ship, with its stored carbon, intact - as celebration of a new understanding of the value of trees to the whole wide world.

Their change of heart will send a powerful message; that we need trees to remain alive for as long as possible, and that when felled we should prolong the timber 'half-life' for as long as we possibly can - not just burn it for a few seconds of cheap thrill.

Do not burn the Mayflower!
