Great Run to end their nutrition partnership with Herbalife
Great Run, the UK's biggest mass participation race series, have announced that Herbalife, known for their meal replacement shakes, is their new nutrition partner.
Great Run have inspired and motivated hundreds of thousands of people to run and take part in one of their races, including the famous Great North Run. They have also established Great Run Local, a series of free, weekly runs for all ages and abilities, organised by volunteers. The events are accessible and a gateway to health and fitness to all.
Herbalife are an established multi level marketing corporation who promote weight management tools. The ethics of this company have been called into question on multiple occasions and in 2016, agreed to pay the US Federal Trade Commission a $200 million fine, after the FTC said that Herbalife had cheated hopeful sales people out of hundreds of millions of dollars with a high pressure multi level marketing scheme.
The premise of Herbalife, which is not available on the high street, is simple. They provide weight loss products and supplements, which aim to help you improve your diet and wellbeing. Products are available through distributors, who also give you nutritional advice. These distributors are rarely, if ever, registered dieticians or nutritionists and the plans encourage meal replacement shakes. Former Herbalife distributors have spoken of the pressure that they are under to sell, with former users speaking of the health implications of taking these harmful products.
Fitness writer and former Great Run Blogger Stephen Morrison, who also launched Great Run Local in Scotland elaborates further on these points in this post. Further cause for upset about their ethics has been discussed here.
How can a company that actively encourages meal replacement shakes full of chemicals in lieu of actual food be trusted to provide nutritional advice to runners?
How can a running event organisation that supports #RealRunners turn its back on #RealFood?
We call on Great Run to end this partnership.
