JoAnne Brown started this petition to Granite School District and

SAFER (Student and Family Education Reboot) Plan will allow students to go to school if needed while keeping teachers and students safer than a traditional or hybrid education model.

Currently, there are three models being discussed: in-person, online, or hybrid. There are problems with all three. I have a different idea. My model is not perfect, but there is nothing that is perfect for this unique situation. This model is based on an article I read by education consultant Tracy Antonioli, with my own Utah twist.

  • Schools are open, but students are taught 100% online.
  • Most students would work from home.
  • Students unable to work from home will come to school to do their online work.
  • Some teachers are in the building, working with students online in classrooms. No more than 15 students in any classroom, and both elementary and secondary students would stay with the same teacher and students all day. Paraeducators would help as well.
This allows parents to go to work who can’t stay home, and reduces the passing times and exposure for those students who must be in person. It also gives students an in-person advocate and helper who can help to guide their online experience.
  • High-risk teachers would work from home online.
  • High-quality training would be required for teachers in order to improve the online experience.

Issues this plan would address: young students need to be in school so parents can work, social-emotional needs of students, food and care required for some, high risk students need to be at home, disengagement online. Students really benefit from being in school in person, and it’s nice that society is finally seeing that. Younger students especially need a great deal of attention and help, which working parents struggled to provide in the spring dismissal. Teachers are uniquely trained and qualified to provide what students need. Teacher issues addressed: exposure for high risk teachers, hours required to maintain quality learning both online and in-person, leave options are limited. Most teachers are not in this profession for the money, but they do require a paycheck to provide for their families. Another aspect of providing for their families is the ability to be there for them when they are not at school. Teachers are willing to sacrifice much more than those in normal professions, but should not be required to risk their lives. Teachers need to be protected just as much as people in other workplaces, but our schools are not set up in a way to guarantee their safety.
