I am a student at Hayes Middle School, part of the Grand Ledge Public Schools District in Grand Ledge, MI. And I believe my school (and probably other schools in our district) is serving unhealthy foods to the students and are not giving them enough choices for lunch.
Serving healthy foods is important, especially for students. It helps them better in school. It gives them something they can eat without worrying about their health. And most importantly, it makes them happier.
When I walk into our cafeteria, I am immediately introduced to three things: pizza, sandwiches, and fries. Pizza, which is so greasy that when you simply place it down on styrofoam plates, grease soaks into it. And I mean a lot. Sandwiches, which usually are only cheeseburgers and fried chicken sandwiches. And fries, which are, in most cases, the only food students eat for lunch. We should fix that, as students should be eating healthier things, like subs (we do have a sub stand, but we should try to expand it and give more choices), chicken wraps, soup, and maybe even whole grain and regular pasta that is not packaged, but locally bought! These could definitely be some better food choices than greasy pizza and fries.
And when you are going through the line to buy your food, you're introduced to even more unhealthy choices: cookies, Cheetos, Oreos, ice cream, etc. I, who eat two cookies a day, need to stop. And what better way than to bring in better choices: peanuts, crackers, fruit bars, yogurt (we do have yogurt, but only Danimals, and they are near the back of the cafeteria and barely anyone notices it. We should bring it closer to the main entrance and give more choices, like Yoplait!) and any other healthy snack choice.
I feel we should find a healthier alternative food provider for our schools, perhaps fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthier choices.
We can do a lot more in helping our schools become both healthier and happier with these food improvements. It could be a great improvement to our school district, and could help me and many others eat healthier and stay fit.
