I am Mattee DeMott, a senior here at Grand Haven High School. As a female student, I have experienced the dress code and its inconveniences many times throughout the last three years. I feel as though through my experiences I am knowledgeable enough to speak on this topic and to therefore be taken seriously. Thank you for your time and consideration of my ideas and suggestions. I do not want to abolish the dress code, I know that is not a feasible goal. I want to adjust and make it fair for those of different body types and different gender identities. A dress code may be necessary for the school district but it does not need to directly oppress a student's desire to express themselves through clothing. I am creating this petition so the staff and school board of Grand Haven High School can see how their student body is reacting to the enforcement and changes of the dress code. I want to give the student body an opportunity to have a voice in this matter, as it affects every student in the building and every student that comes after us. After my graduation I want to know I did everything I could to improve student life here at Grand Haven High School.
