Pay GCU Student-workers in shift lead/managerial positions more than minimum wage
The student workers at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona are getting paid minimum wage, even the ones who are in a shift lead or managerial position. Meaning they do a lot more required work for no extra pay or compensation whatsoever, oftentimes even when they notify their manager that they do not want to be in that position.
Currently the minimum wage in Arizona is $12.15, rising to $12.80 at the start of 2022. The goal of this is to raise the hourly pay of the GCU student workers who are in shift lead/managerial positions to $1.25 above the state of Arizona's minimum wage ($13.40 for 2021, $14.05 for 2022). Some fast food restaurants on GCU's campus has student manager positions, which are above the shift lead positions, meaning they do the majority of the work of their own manager, but still for minimum wage and no other compensation, so for those student workers who are in the managerial position above shift lead positions, they would receive an additional $1.25 an hour (A total of $14.65 for 2021, $15.30 in 2022). In addition to the added responsibility of those positions, oftentimes, those student workers are working above the 20 hour per week "cap" GCU has set for their student workers, which is breaching their own rule they have set out for their workers.
For those students who have responsibilities such as being an RA, Life Leader (leading weekly Bible studies for their building) in ASGCU, or CAB, among many other responsibilities which specifically state that their extracurricular activities should not exceed 20 hours a week ever, which again is breaking GCU's own rules.
If GCU decides to raises their wages for their student workers who are doing extra work, most of the time when they don't want to, it would be greatly beneficial to the student body as a whole, and give an actual meaning to taking a "promotion" to being a shift lead in their work place.
