We, the undersigned, would like to take this opportunity to present to the Board of Education of Granby, CT and all relevant administration a list of concerns regarding the behavior, attitude, and conduct of the principal of Kelly Lane School, Mrs. Kimberly Dessert. We have found that Mrs. Dessert is fostering an atmosphere of bullying and abuse by refusing to acknowledge ongoing issues in a misguided effort to maintain the reputation of Kelly Lane school. The atmosphere has created an environment in which parents and children can not assume safety is the first priority. Listed below are generalized behaviors and actions of Mrs. Dessert witnessed or endured by the undersigned and their children.

  • Willful ignorance resulting in further abuse of children. By refusing to report incidents properly or changing details of reports, abusers are often not even addressed, never mind reprimanded. This allows the abuser to continue their cycle of hurting classmates.
  • Victim blaming, suggesting that victims of bullying and/or abuse need to “toughen up. Telling the child who dares to speak up that these things would not be happening to them if they would just stay away from the bully. This creates a deeper level of shame in the victim than already existed and children very quickly internalize these emotions.
  • Creating an atmosphere where parents and children are unable to speak up without fear of reprisal.
  • A refusal to respond to parental complaints and concerns via email or any form of writing. Often times, Mrs. Dessert makes assurances or promises over the phone or in person, but by refusing to communicate in writing, she is not held to any level of accountability and parents often find themselves in a “her word versus ours” situation.
     

The behavior and attitude of Kimberly Dessert is a long hushed secret of Kelly Lane. However, parents are no longer willing to jeopardize the physical, mental, and emotional well being of their children in order to maintain a high rating or positive review of the school system. We trust that the Board of Education will address the situation created with fairness, and most importantly with the future of our children in mind.
