- Handmade Products Provide Sustenance and Dignity to the Lives of a Majority in India.
- Handmade Products do Not Pollute but Protect the Environment.
- Handmade Products Provide Jobs to the Unemployed.
- Handmade Products are Made in India, 100%.
For the first time since independence, tax has been imposed on all handmade products. Handloom, handicrafts, and other produce made by hand are now taxed under the new Goods and Services tax (GST) regime. The lives of millions of Indian farmers and artisans, already distressed, have already taken a turn for the worse since July. GST is a topsy-turvy regime. Luxury products have become cheaper while handmade products have become expensive under this regime! Cars and cigarettes cost less, while a Khadi saree, a handloom kurta, a mat, pot and plough shall cost more from now on.
A Satyagraha is underway since early September in various parts of Karnataka and Telangana to demand that all handmade products be made zero-tax. Multiple demands have been submitted to state and central governments and major political parties to address the serious issues faced by millions of our poor as a result of this unjust tax.
The lack of response from all governments has forced an intensification of the Satyagraha. A nine day padayatra in Karnataka from Junjappana Gudde to Arasikere is underway now to expand the Satyagraha across Karnataka and to solicit support from across the country. It is critical that millions of right thinking people from all regions support this Satyagraha.
If you agree that Nature, Environment and the livelihood and dignity of the poor needs protection and support through government action, please support this petition addressed to the Prime Minister of India.
Introduce zero-tax on all handmade products such as handloom textiles, pots, baskets, mats, etc. Also recognize all natural products, grown through natural farming, such as natural foods, natural cotton, etc, as handmade products.
Introduce punitive tax on polluting industrial products and/or carbon intensive industrial products.
‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam’ must be included in the preamble of the constitution. We further demand that steps be taken on a war footing to protect the climate, nature, animals and the poor people.
