Support Subsidized Housing for SFHMC Resident House Staff

This petition had 77 supporters

We petition Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center to provide safe, subsidized housing to their house staff and residents.

Prior to entering contract with our perspective departments, we were afforded the option of subsidized housing once employed by SFHMC/Uconn.  As a result, many residents and staff signed leases to live at Woodland Park Apartments.  Woodland Park Apartments is gated and patrolled regularly by security. The location of the housing has allowed us to be safe and close to the hospital to fulfill the demands of our jobs.  In addition, the subsidized price allows residents to afford to reside in an area with a high cost of living, while meeting required student loan repayments.

In a letter dated February 10, 2017 each unit at Woodland Park Apartments received a document stating that our current leases will not be renewed after June 30, 2017.  Resources for relocation were limited to websites and a regional director for Trinity Health, who provided contact for a local realtor.  Prior to the letter, residents at Woodland Park Apartments were given no other notice.

Resident and staff housing is being terminated to make room for an ambulatory surgery center for the Hartford campus.  The explanation given is that “one of our primary goals is to shift from an acute care business model to a focus on ambulatory care.”  Nowhere within the letter is there concern for those most greatly affected by this change, those who work at SFHMC.  Instead, the focus is on the potential for business.   The core values of Trinity Health New England- reverence, commitment to those who are poor, justice, stewardship, and integrity- have not been upheld.  There is no mention or concern for how this may affect current hospital staff and residents or recruitment to these programs.

For these reasons stated above we urge Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center to re-visit this decision.  If unable to preserve the exiting subsidized housing, we suggest finding another location for resident housing and/or offering to pay for moving costs of all current tenants to help offset the unexpected financial burden.
