The Honorable Senator Joel Villanueva
Chair, Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resource Development
The Honorable Grace Poe
Chair, Committee on Public Information and Mass Media
Dear Senators Villanueva and Poe,
The violent, unprovoked dispersal of workers of NutriAsia yesterday, that seriously wounded many including journalists, urban poor supporters and youth leaders and the incarceration of 19 persons in the Meycauayan jail, is an affront to civil society. The workers have been peacefully conducting their picket for the regularization of hundreds of contractuals as required by both national and international labor laws. But instead of reasonably engaging with the workers, NutriAsia management appeared to have had deployed its violent force as seen in the attack on the workers and their supporters by security guards and the police.
In our belief that as representatives of the will and interest of the people, you take this incident to heart. We petition that your committees conduct an immediate and independent investigation of this violent dispersal and arrests of NutriAsia workers and their supporters. We have faith that your investigation will be fair and courageous in ferreting out the truth. Hopefully, the investigation will result in reforms in our laws concerning the rights of workers.
