Swarnava Naskar started this petition to Govt. of India

Hello everyone,

Greetings of the day. Hope you're doing well and fine. The global democracy watchdog Freedom House, recently downgraded India from 'Free' to 'Partly Free', in light of the erosion of civil liberties and attack on institutions of democracy in India. A recent example of such attempts at suppressing dissent and free speech, is the case against Ms. Disha Ravi, a 21-year old climate activist based out of Bengaluru. Ms. Ravi has been accused by the government of sharing a "toolkit", a much talked about document which was allegedly used to incite violence during the farmers protest in Delhi, on 26th of January. She was arrested by the Delhi Police from Bengaluru, and accused of editing and dissemination of the toolkit in social media, which was also shared widely by Greta Thunberg, a leading global climate activist. In a subsequent judgement, the Delhi Court decided to grant her bail stating that the evidence for conspiracy of violence was "conspicuously absent". It further stated, that citizens are conscience keepers of the government in any democratic nation, and cannot simply be put behind bars for choosing to disagree with state policies.

In light of the above mentioned facts, we urge you to support the following demands-

1.The government should drop the criminal charges against Ms. Disha Ravi.

2. Stopping the targeted bullying and harassment of intellectuals, activists and journalists who critique government policies and actions.

3. Actions to improve press freedom and preserve free speech in all its forms.
