ICE has announced that students on student visas attending universities that have decided to go online-only must depart the United States and cannot remain through the fall semester. Those who are outside the United States will be denied visas.
The Pennsylvania State University is currently planning to have classes in in-person until thanksgiving break and go online. However, With the spikes of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of what will come the chance of the university deciding to take the same steps of going online-only such as Harvard and California State system is likely.
Going online-only will detrimentally impact thousands of our fellow students. Their educational opportunities will be harmed by the challenges of uncertainty and difficulties of access and communication from being back home. Many have committed financially to housing and cars for the year with car and housing leases. Many students cannot transfer due to upper-division class restrictions, forcing them to put a pause of their education. Those who can have to extend their finance even more than they already have given the lack of financial aid.
The only way to protect our community is to maintain and guarantee that Penn State will remain in the same hybrid model for the remainder of the pandemic.
