Parents of high school students at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as well as other Bethlehem Area School District Schools were given the options of hybrid learning, cyber learning, or e-learning for the upcoming school year. Those of us who made the tough decision to choose e-learning, are now being told that our students cannot participate in school sports.
Though we understand the main question of “if you don’t want your children in school why would you want them to play a sport”, it still is not fair to need to choose a certain “style” of learning in order for our young people to experience the other benefits of public education. Some of the students are uncomfortable with being in the crowded hallways & in classrooms at close proximity to others during the pandemic, but are comfortable w/ being outdoors playing the sports they love.
What about the colleges that want to see playing time before awarding scholarships to young people to help further their education. This can start as early as their junior years. Seniors will also miss out on the ability to be “scouted” if they aren’t playing. Or having videos of their plays sent to colleges.
Please help us help them, by allowing them to participate no matter what “style” of learning they have chosen this school year!
Don’t let their opportunities diminish! Allow e-learners to participate in High School Athletics!!
