Harrison Smith is a 40-year-old man that has been incarcerated since he was 19 years old in 1995. This petition is a request for support in correcting a sentencing error.  On July 01, 1995 parole was abolished in Virginia. However, jurors were not made aware parole had been abolished, and that individuals now had to serve 85% of the time given. Most people believe convicted individuals are still eligible for parole and serving less than half of their sentence.

To date, he has already served 85% of his sentence and has literally spent half of his entire life incarcerated. He has served and used his time wisely, to obtain both an electrical and custodial maintenance certification(s). In addition, to making connections with potential employers upon release.

He has been a model inmate and charge free for over 10 years. He has completed all programs offered to him. He has utilized all available avenues to promote personal growth and advocate for his freedom. Most recently he submitted his conditional pardon (August 2016), which is still under investigation.I believe he deserves a second chance.

Like most people, he simply wants to live a quiet life, in peace. However, he does feel obligated to give back to those who have supported him and to help build his community. He would like to keep others from making bad decisions that could get them where he has been.

I don't believe most people as they get older, think the same as a 19-year-old, young adult. Your signature of support would be one step toward his freedom and him being a productive member of society.
