In today's world, we are facing a change of opinion about the legal status of marijuana. In recent polls, just over half of Americans believe that marijuana should be legal. And in Iowa alone, 59% of the residents think a medical marijuana program should be instated. This idea has met strong resistance, though. Strong opposers of medical marijuana still accept the old ideas that marijuana is terrible and refuse to see the benefits of the drug. Let's take a scientific approach to looking at this topic and set aside the stereotypes. One, many doctors throughout the nation have realized the fact that the chemicals called cannabinoids in marijuana reduce the size of cancerous tumors and help destroy cancerous cells. Second, marijuana has an amazing ability to alleviate the pain that comes with many diseases. Finally, some doctors even are saying that, according to new research, marijuana may even be able to reverse some of the carcinogenic effects of tobbaco smoke. Of course, this research is only preliminary, and more research needs to be done. There are many other arguments for marijuana and even against it. Every drug has side efects, but you don't hear about lawmakers pushing for medical alcohol. The thousands of people that are waiting for marijuana legalization in Iowa could benefit greatly from legalization, and it could even save their lives. Lawmakers just need to set aside the harmful stereotypes associated with marijuana and look at the benefits.
