Why this petition matters

Started by Linda Cogdell

Dominic Cogdell has served 13 years in prison for the crimes that he was convicted of as a minor. He was convicted at 17, however, the Robeson County justice system waited till he was 18 and tried him as an adult. He was aggressively questioned as a minor and interrogated by police officers without the presence of a lawyer or his legal guardians. Dominic was sentenced to six consecutive six-year sentences. Dominic deserves a second chance to be a part of society. There was never a rehabilitation program available to keep young men of color off the streets to show them a better way to channel their anger and other mental health issues. The problem in this matter is that he has served enough time and his family would like to plea to Governor Roy Cooper (North Carolina) to have him released. There are so many members of the black community who are receiving excessive amounts of prison time which is opposite of any other race in the United States. I ask that this petition be reviewed and considered for the immediate release of Dominic Cogdell. Thank you in advance for your time.
