Governor Rick Snyder of Michigan: Veto SB 59 to prevent the expansion of concealed weapons

Everyday in the United States, 34 people lose their lives to gun violence. Since 1982, 62 massacres have captured the lives of our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children.

This epidemic of gun violence demands action. Just mere hours before the horrific tragedy that took 27 lives in at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, the Michigan Legislature passed a bill radically changing gun control laws in the state.

The legislation, known as SB 59, would allow gun-owners to carry concealed weapons in zones previously designated as "no-carry" zones in Michigan -- including schools, bars, churches, and public parks.

Some of the worst massacres within recent years have been at schools and universities, including at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and Sandy Hook Elementary. But these horrific massacres account for only a small portion of American gun violence, which claims thousands of lives each year. We owe it to those lost to gun violence and their families to prevent further tragedies.

Governor Rick Snyder has the power to set a precedent for the nation. By vetoing this legislation, Governor Snyder will show that the tide in America is turning. The murders of innocent people will no longer be tolerated as the price paid for Second Amendment liberty.
